A Return to Traditional Values

In the 1950s people were much more sensible than we are today. They didn't go around wasting their money on frivolous and unnecessary items. This type of "smart living" explains why they made their own canine winter coats and doggy rain gear. Today we are much more careless with our resources, filling our dogs' closets with overpriced, low quality store bought canine couture. Gone are the days when Mommy would make that special Christmas coat for Sparky, sewing each button on with love and pride. We are distracted by our busy lives and are no longer willing to invest the time to knit those special beagle booties or that terrier toboggan to keep tiny ears warm. When will we get our priorities in order? Our furry friends deserve better.

Where are you finding these old patterns? They are wonderful. The prices crack me up. Being much older than you -- probably the age of your mother -- I remember when patterns were .50 to 1.00 each. And I remember when "New Sizing" became the hot topic.
As far as the crocheted vests -- I am not going to tell you how many I made and wore in the 70's.
Fun!

I've been sitting here laughing, at times so hard my eyes have watered, and then I came upon the pooches ponchos and I died a little inside. You see that yellow thing, with the freakishly large collar, is far too similar to the raincoat I purchased for my little brown dog, Amos. Clearly I need to make an appointment with a shrink to discuss my childhood spent in Cindy Brady drag.

OK, you've got to expect comments like this from someone whose web name is KathleenSews. There are many merchants selling dog clothing. http://www.jbpet.com/ - click on "clothing" on the left is one. Others specialize in costumes or accessories for your pet www.canineclothing.com for instance. And sewers and knitters/crocheters are making them. http://members.aol.com/AHTerrier/outfits.html has lots of books of patterns and most current sewing pattern catalogs (Simplicity, McCalls, etc.) have some.

If these pooches could speak, they'd say, "Oh, the humiliation!" Can you get any more kitchy than to put Scottie in a tartan ("beam me to hell out of here") and Pierre ("sacre bleu!")in a gay Paree-sian foo-foo outfit. And whose fault is it when Mike Tyson goes out to lift a leg in that slicker and the other dogs kick his ass?

My dog wears a coat too. Without it he doesn't want to stay outside long enough to get any exercise. He's an 85lb bulldog.
